84 Lumber Case Study

84 Lumber is an American building materials supply company. Founded in 1956 by Joseph Hardy, it derives its name from the town of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, where its headquarters are. 84 Lumber owns and operates over 250 stores, and the company operates components plants, door shops, installation centers and wood products shops in 30 states.

The Challenge:  Lack of vendor trust

84 Lumber Company is the nation’s leading privately held supplier of building materials, building supplies, manufactured components and industry-leading services for single and multi-family residences and commercial buildings.

84 Lumber experienced multiple days downtime in multiple locations because of the poor service quality of their telecom vendor. The vendor response times were very long, provided lack luster help desk support and offered no guarantees of the quality of service via service level agreements.

The Optus Solution:  Dedicated project manager & shorter lead times

After successfully completing a round of test service tickets, 84 Lumber decided to make Optus their sole telecom vendor. Optus provided numerous benefits to 84 Lumber immediately including shorter lead times, knowledgeable technicians that offered higher quality support, timely response to concerns and changes with guaranteed service level agreements, and dedicated assistance with large projects.

The Impact:  Quick turnaround, business continuity, support services

By utilizing Optus’ project management team, 84 Lumber completes more projects in less time with minimal downtime. Not only did 84 Lumber have a major time savings by switching to Optus, they had an annual cost savings of $40,000 over their previous vendor.
